If I've learned nothing else from my animation classes, I've learned the value of an Animatic. Free as a Bird is my first project to use one and already I can see how it vastly improves the process. (For those that don't know, an animatic is the storyboard and soundtrack played together as a sort of timing and shot test for the project)
I think the static nature of the animatic really helps me see when timing is too long or too short and where there are bad jump cuts and where reaction shots and different angles are needed. Its also fun to build because its really quick to put together the initial cut and get a feel of how the story is going to look (which made it exciting to me)
My first pass cut of Free as a Bird is just under 4 minutes long. O_O A lot of it is loops and holds and camera, but that's still a LOT of animation. Excluding the Iron Claw video, my longest animated piece has only been about 2 minutes in length. Getting it done by the end of May will take some serious effort. I think I can do it. The character designs are simple and it's linework only, not coloured or even filled, and like I said earlier. Lots of 'cheats'.
Looking forward to getting the new animation stand. That will be GREAT for a lot of the camera moves and rotations. Much much much better than trying to do it digitally.
