Nein!

Yesterday (9/9/9) at 90 minutes to 9, we watched 9. We got out at 9:09 which made us 9 minutes late to get to Ranch 99. Instead, we went there at 9 this morning where I purchased 9 different ramen lunches.

All this banter is because I don't really feel like talking about the movie, though I feel compelled to. I'm disappointed with it. I feel like it's Tim Burton's weakest offering to date. For the most part, I've liked Burton a lot. He's been one of my favorite modern directors and of course, I'm a huge animation fan and the world the film was set in was pretty neat.

I've got no complaints about the world, character designs, or animation, but the editing was a bit weak. The pacing was rather off. However, much more distracting was the story itself. It was just not very good, not very compelling. The characters weren't engaging, the plot was nearly purposeless, and the resolution was just kind of.... Eh.

It's by no means the worst film I've ever watched but I think I'd recommend people save their money on this one. There just isn't a lot in it to warrant seeing it on the big screen. :/ And this from someone who's a fan of Tim Burton, rag dolls, and burlap. *sigh*

Would you say that the original short film pretty much covers everything necessary (and mercifully without Star Talent doing character voices)?

I would say, unlike D9, the original short film(s) were too unrelated to the movie.

Burton didn't make it, much like Peter Jackson didn't make District 9.

But yeah, I found mostly the editing and some of the plot to be too formulaic or unresolved. But it was a fun watch.

I've hated Tim Burton a long time, despite wanting to like him. Hack is a word that was coined to describe him. It is, I feel, a perfect fit for him.

Eh. You must be kind some Batman fan for something.

'Ed Wood' and 'Mars Attacks' are both excellent films.

No, they can do to batman what they will, he's never been my super hero of choice. Mars Attacks was not an excellent film. It wasn't even a good film I think it hit "meh" on my chart. I've never seen Ed Wood.

Ah yes. I forget how young you are. You're one of those people who's grown up with 5000 channels of crap on cable with which to addle your mind.

As a child we had 4 TV channels on a good day and the BEST regular shows they played were of the grade of Dukes of Hazard and edited down re-runs of Casper the Friendly Ghost or Tom and Jerry.

We practically lived for Sherman Oaks and Mr. Pickle's Saturday Night Creature Feature. Every weekend TWO, count em TWO classic 50's B sci-fi or monster movies! And when we finally got a video tape machine, B movies were my brother and I's favorite fare. We'd front the 50 cent rental cost ourselves and stay up all night watching really really bad films all summer long.

If you'd had that experience, you would understand just how brilliant Mars Attacks is, but I suppose you'll never understand. It's probably too late now. You're spoiled with decent special effects and convincing costumes. Feh.

The best part of those old films is how they'd basically not bother with characterisation and just stick new names on the same tired archetypes. For example, the crotchety elderly person.

*grin*

The cheerful policeman.
The SCIENTIST
The town drunk
The girl who twists her ankle and screams
The general
The handsome dashing hero!
The damsel in distress!
and of course we can't forget the star of the show, $MONSTER!

I loved $MONSTER. All of them. As a child I never understood why 90% of the movie was focused on the dull and uninteresting people and $MONSTER typically only got a few seconds of screen time. It seemed so unfair. I wanted $MONSTER on the screen not BoringMan and LoveInterest.

I don't think 9 is a Tim Burton film... it struck me more as a short film that Tim Burton saw, liked, and injected a bunch of money into to stretch out to a feature.

And then somebody at Disney saw how pretty it looked and put some money behind the marketing.

I felt myself wondering, "who on earth is the intended audience of this...?" But I also concluded that it probably would make a decent videogame.

Just not a really good film...

Yes. I too thought it would have been better as a video game.

Also, every time I looked at the textures on the faces of the characters I was thinking to myself, "NURBS!!!!"
