Which is worse? Java or Flash?

I know pretty much nothing about web design, but Flash tends to be a little easier on my browser than Java.

Every system I've used always grinds to a halt for a few seconds when it has to load the Java interpreter.

Of course, sites that are all Flash also annoy the fuck out of me, especially when using Flash for say... text display.

Java is worse for me... Flash at least tends to actually work more often. I have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] lediva though -- using Flash to display text is kinda pointless.

Recently I did a sweep of 'Add or Remove Software' and found about 10 Java Runtime Environment 'updates' installed each over 100 Mb. I sure hope I don't need all of those -- I deleted all but the last one. I don't know why the installer doesn't do it by itself.

Flash is easier to deal with

Java is worse. It's a greater security risk.

Java sucks more. Grinds the whole computer to a stop for a few minutes displaying its coffee-cup logo while it loads the huge plugin. Flash is shit but at least it loads fast.

On the other hand, Java applets typically run a hell of a lot faster than Flash stuff does, at least for me. Flash is a hideous unoptimized cycle pig.

On the gripping hand, Java's the butt of a hell of a lot of jokes about it being a bondage & discipline language. By all reports it seems to tend towards being mind-numbingly verbose.

Functionally, Flash is worse because Java can do neater-looking stuff. But by "worse", I only mean cool-but-not-as-cool.

As an executable, Java loses. Way too much baggage.

Both - depending on what you're doing. Flash memory HOG hog hog. Java, lots of little nits with different browsers.

I'd say Flash.

Though if you want to go for something completely horrid, mix the two. And then add color changing text for good measure. :D

*Helpful*

The Amiga is dead,it's not coming back, get over it.

I laughed. Amiga: the undead platform. It roams the earth, neither alive nor dead, eating the processors of the living platforms.

Also: Java sucks more. Flash if you have to, Ajax is less sucky, but I'mma sticking to the noframes version.

Heh. I just wanted to know that someone saw that page at least once. I've always kept my website Lynx-compatible and the last re-design I did I decided to use frames, but I still made that page with a redirect to it if their browser didn't support frames.

Now I'm considering a new re-design just because the current look is a bit dated and doesn't represent my present art skills and fashion sense. Oy.

Hm. Yeah, it does look very 2001y. What-with the rollovers and black backgrounds and tables and lack of external .css file. But Flash or Java? Those are both already dated unless it's used sparingly, or is for animation (Youtube or Weebls-stuff). Go straight to the clean, table-less design, using a single css file for all the formatting.

Could be worse, tho. It could be all in pink.

I dislike CSS because it's not very conducive to being written straight from my head with a text editor. (How I still do all of my HTML code)

Also, I was thinking about making my site somewhat interactive with some low-bandwidth animation and time-waster type stuff on the main page.

Shun the unbeliever! Shuuuuuuunnnn!
(Charlie references are good everywhere!)

Seriously, though, css is good because it lets you modularize the design, and on the whole is faster load times. Also, if you haven't checked it out already, I figure you'd get use out of Coda. It's a text editor, terminal, ftp client, web browser (for previews), and reference guide all in one window (using tabs) designed around web development. I don't use it because I shy away from raw HTMLing, but it's gotten good reviews.

Good question... Java seems to require a good deal of updates, however flash seems to take up a great deal of power to run...

Launch clogs!

Speaking as a suspicious and resentful luddite, I abhor both Java and Flash (exception given to flash animated short subjects such as Bitey of Brackenwood and Blue Baby meets Orange Baby). I also abhor cookies. I browse with all of the above disabled unless absolutely necessary. If you must sully your home page with glitz, I would prefer Flash over Java.
